Chicago research links extreme heat to unexpected health issues

Research conducted in Chicago has highlighted the connection between extreme heat waves and various health issues beyond simple dehydration and heatstroke. An analysis of 1,803 hospital diagnoses recorded between 2011 and 2023 during the summer months reveals that rising temperatures are linked to several unexpected pathologies.

Frequent diagnoses during periods of extreme heat include kidney diseases, skin conditions, and venous system disorders. Additionally, the study notes an increase in mental health issues, such as heightened aggression, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating, which tend to worsen during intense heat waves.
