Chicago River bridge stuck in raised position due to extreme heat
The DuSable Lake Shore Drive bridge in downtown Chicago became stuck in a raised position for over four hours on Wednesday due to extreme heat. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. during a scheduled lift intended to allow a boat to pass through the Chicago River at Grand Avenue.
According to the Chicago Department of Transportation, the high temperatures caused bridge components to expand, which prevented the two leaves of the bridge from closing fully. To resolve the issue, city crews and the Chicago Fire Department worked to cool the bridge components.
The bridge was successfully lowered and reopened to traffic shortly before 2:30 p.m., though the closure caused significant traffic congestion in the downtown area. The malfunction coincided with a wave of extreme heat in the region, for which the National Weather Service had issued warnings.
