Chicago shooting highlights delays after ShotSpotter termination
A fatal shooting in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood has highlighted concerns regarding the city’s decision to terminate its contract with ShotSpotter, a gunfire detection system. On Sunday, a man in his early 40s was found dead in an alley with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite approximately 17 shell casings being recovered at the scene, police reported no 911 calls regarding gunfire in the area, leading to a dispatch delay of roughly 24 minutes.
Since Mayor Brandon Johnson disconnected the ShotSpotter technology in September 2024, investigators have identified 91 shooting incidents in former coverage areas where response times were delayed due to a lack of 911 calls or vague location information. Data indicates that the fatality rate in these delayed-response cases is nearly 60%, which is approximately three times higher than the general 21% fatality rate for shooting victims in Chicago this year.
