Chicago to hold first fully elected school board election

Chicago residents will vote this fall for members of the city’s first fully elected school board during the November 3 general election. The election will feature all 21 seats on the Chicago Board of Education on the ballot.

Eligible voters can cast two votes: one for a candidate in their specific school board district and a second for the school board president. The president is elected citywide for a four-year term. The city is divided into 20 electoral districts for these local representative roles.

There are 43 candidates and three write-ins participating in the election. The new board, which will be seated in January, will replace the current hybrid model of partially elected and partially appointed members. Half of the elected members will serve four-year terms, while the other half will serve two-year terms.
