Chicago White Sox host ‘Pope Night’ to honor Pope Leo XIV
The Chicago White Sox hosted a themed ‘Pope Night’ at Rate Field to honor Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and longtime fan of the team. The event, held during a game against the Cincinnati Reds, featured a massive giveaway of black-and-gold hats designed to resemble a papal mitre.
Originally planned as a limited promotion for 2,500 ticket holders, high demand forced management to expand the giveaway to the entire stadium capacity, providing hats to over 40,000 fans. Those who had purchased the initial promotional vouchers received special white Southside jerseys featuring the text ‘CHICAGO’S POPE’ and the number 14.
The evening included several religious-themed activities, such as a ceremonial first pitch thrown by Sister Mary Jo Sobieck and a fifth-inning ‘sign of peace’ led by Father Tom Hurley. The White Sox Charities also donated $14,000 to the Augustinians, the religious order to which the Pope belongs. Despite the festivities, the White Sox lost the game to the Reds with a score of 5-4.
