Chicago White Sox retire Ozzie Guillén's number 13

The Chicago White Sox officially retired the number 13 in honor of Ozzie Guillén during a ceremony at Guaranteed Rate Field before a game against the Cleveland Guardians. The 62-year-old Venezuelan became the first former manager in franchise history to receive this distinction, as well as the 13th individual honored by the organization.

Guillén’s legacy with the team spans multiple roles: he played as a shortstop for 13 seasons (1985–1997), winning American League Rookie of the Year in 1985 and a Gold Glove in 1990. He later returned to manage the team from 2004 to 2011, famously leading the White Sox to their World Series championship in 2005.

The ceremony was attended by his family, White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, and former players including Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski. During his speech, Guillén noted the emotional weight of the event, stating, “I’ve never been nervous playing baseball. I’ve never been nervous managing baseball. But today I am very, very nervous because this is a different moment.”
