Chichén Itzá implements special operations for autumn equinox
Chichén Itzá is implementing a special operation on September 20 and 21, 2026, to manage the influx of visitors for the autumn equinox. The event centers on the light and shadow phenomenon at the Temple of Kukulcán, where a serpent silhouette is projected onto the northern stairway. While the astronomical equinox occurs on September 22, the visual effect is expected to be visible between 15:00 and 16:30.
To maintain order and preserve the site, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the Government of Yucatán have announced several restrictions. During the operation, the Great Museum of Chichén Itzá and the Chichén Viejo (Initial Series) complex will be closed. Additionally, access to the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Thousand Columns, the Maya House, Cenote Xtoloc, the Ossuary, and the Observatory will be restricted starting at 16:00.
Visitor services at the Visitor Attention Center (Catvi) will open at 08:00, with ticket sales and final entry to the archaeological zone concluding at 16:00. Entry fees vary: foreign visitors pay 697 pesos, while national visitors and residents pay 310 pesos (or 289 pesos with the Cultura Vale card). Certain groups, including seniors over 60, minors under 13, and people with disabilities, are exempt from entrance fees.
