Chick-fil-A CEO Andrew Cathy addresses LGBTQ+ rights controversy
Chick-fil-A CEO Andrew Cathy addressed the company's history regarding LGBTQ+ rights during a broadcast interview on NBC’s ‘Today’. When questioned by co-anchor Craig Melvin about the company's official stance on equal rights and its past controversies, Cathy declined to provide a direct position on LGBTQ+ issues.
Cathy stated that the company is focused on ‘hospitality, serving great-tasting food and great service,’ adding that anyone willing to walk through the door is welcome to eat there. The interview revisited the 2012 controversy involving former CEO Dan Cathy, who expressed support for the ‘biblical definition of the family’ and opposition to same-sex marriage. The company has previously faced boycotts and criticism over donations made by its WinShape Foundation to Christian organizations that oppose LGBTQ+ rights.
The interview drew mixed reactions. Some commentators and social media users criticized Cathy for providing what they termed a ‘non-answer’ regarding equality, while others, including NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck, accused the network of conducting an ‘ambush’ by focusing heavily on the controversy.
