Bolivia implements new phase of dollar repatriation and exchange rate shifts
The Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB) has entered a new phase of its gradual dollar repatriation program. Starting Friday, August 14, depositors can access funds in the range of $us 3,001 to $us 5,000. This follows an initial stage that allowed withdrawals between $us 1,001 and $us 3,000.
The BCB has established a long-term schedule for these withdrawals, with limits increasing monthly through December 2026. Starting in January 2027, the bank plans to facilitate the return of larger deposits, eventually reaching amounts up to $us 50,000.
Concurrently, Economy Minister José Gabriel Espinoza stated that the recent downward trend in the dollar's exchange rate is expected to continue, citing data-driven analysis rather than speculation. The official rate recently reached Bs 11.77. While the decline provides some relief, importers have called for further stability, suggesting that a rate closer to Bs 9 would be ideal to mitigate the rising costs of goods and stabilize market prices.
