Chicoloapan school incident leaves six-year-old boy with vision loss
A six-year-old boy named Mateo, who has autism, has lost vision in his right eye following an incident at the Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez elementary school in Chicoloapan, State of Mexico. According to family reports, a classmate attacked the child with a pencil in the classroom on October 27.
Medical professionals at the Hospital de Especialidades in Ixtapaluca and the Hospital de Luz discovered a graphite fragment in the child's eyeball. Despite emergency surgery, doctors confirmed the loss of vision in the affected eye.
The family alleges that the teacher, identified as Karen “N”, and the school director, Aurora “N”, failed to report the severity of the incident immediately. They claim the teacher initially described the event as a blow from a hand rather than a pencil injury.
In response to the incident, family members and other parents staged a protest by closing the school. They are demanding criminal action and the dismissal of both the teacher and the director, citing negligence and the failure to address previous reports of bullying.
