Chicory root syrup identified as low-calorie sugar substitute

Chicory root syrup is emerging as a natural sugar substitute that offers significant health benefits, particularly for digestive health and metabolic regulation. Produced through a water extraction process without artificial enzymes or chemical additives, the syrup has a thick, dark consistency similar to honey or caramel.

A key component of the syrup is its high concentration of inulin and oligofructose, which act as prebiotics. These fibers reach the intestines intact, serving as nourishment for beneficial lactic acid bacteria. This process supports the microbiome, improves intestinal peristalsis, and aids regular bowel movements.

From a nutritional standpoint, chicory syrup is low in calories, providing approximately 150–160 kcal per 100g, which is over 60 percent less than white sugar. It also possesses a very low glycemic index (under 5), preventing rapid insulin and glucose spikes. This makes it a viable option for individuals managing insulin resistance or diabetes. Additionally, the fermentation of inulin in the large intestine produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), which can help reduce inflammation, regulate satiety, and improve mineral absorption, such as calcium and magnesium.
