Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae calls for judicial independence

Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae emphasized the necessity of judicial independence and neutrality during the 12th ‘Republic of Korea Judiciary Day’ ceremony held at the Supreme Court. Cho stated that the judiciary can only realize the rule of law when it conducts fair trials based on the Constitution and laws, free from undue interference or influence from other state organs, political powers, social forces, or litigants.

He noted that the judiciary serves as the final bastion for protecting citizens' fundamental rights and must fulfill this constitutional mission regardless of external pressures. Cho also addressed the increasing complexity of legal cases and the rise in social conflicts being brought to court, urging the judiciary to remain steadfast in following legal principles as tensions escalate.

These remarks come amid an ongoing standoff between the Supreme Court and the Blue House regarding the nomination of Supreme Court justices. The dispute follows Cho's decision to submit written nominations for two judges, a move that deviated from the traditional practice of in-person consultation with the President. This tension has contributed to prolonged vacancies on the Supreme Court bench.
