Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae emphasizes judicial independence
Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae emphasized the necessity of judicial independence during the 20th Asia-Pacific Chief Justices Conference held in Seoul. Addressing international judicial leaders, Cho stated that the independence of the judiciary must be protected regardless of challenges to uphold democracy and the rule of law.
While acknowledging that cooperation between the judicial, legislative, and executive branches is essential for resolving complex social conflicts, Cho stressed that such cooperation must respect the unique responsibilities of each institution and guarantee judicial autonomy. He urged judges to have the courage to rule based solely on law and principles, regardless of external pressures.
These remarks come amid a growing tension between the Supreme Court and the presidential office regarding the nomination of a Supreme Court justice. The dispute arose after the Chief Justice submitted a nominee, which the presidential office rejected, labeling it a “unilateral written nomination without substantial consultation” and demanding a re-nomination. The judiciary is currently considering whether to restart the entire candidate recommendation process.
