Chief Justice Cho Hee-de summoned to National Assembly audit amid nomination dispute
A political conflict between the South Korean judiciary and the executive branch has escalated following the National Assembly's decision to summon Chief Justice Cho Hee-de as a witness for an upcoming audit. The controversy stems from Chief Justice Cho's refusal to comply with a request from the Blue House to re-nominate a candidate for the Supreme Court.
Noh Kyung-pil, Chief of the Court Administration, testified before the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee that the Blue House's official request was ambiguous, making it unclear whether the previous nomination was being rejected or if the Chief Justice was being asked to withdraw it. Noh also denied rumors that Chief Justice Cho had reacted with anger to the Court Administration's internal recommendations.
The Democratic Party led the motion to summon Cho as a general witness to investigate the reasons behind his refusal to re-nominate. In contrast, the People Power Party condemned the move as an unconstitutional attack on the separation of powers, arguing that the President should instead be summoned to explain the legal basis for the re-nomination request. Chief Justice Cho has indicated he will address the matter during the scheduled National Assembly audit.
