Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie faces scrutiny over state enterprise remarks

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is facing intense scrutiny following recent visits to state-owned enterprises, including the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

During these engagements, the Chief Justice commended current management at MIIF but questioned the performance of state institutions over the previous eight years. At SSNIT, he compared current practices to past attempts to sell assets, such as the Labadi Beach Hotel. These remarks have sparked a debate regarding judicial neutrality and the separation of powers.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticized the comments as partisan and called for the Chief Justice's resignation. Conversely, the Judicial Service issued a statement clarifying that the observations were made in “good faith” and were not intended to undermine judicial independence or impartiality.

Civil society groups, including CDD-Ghana, warned that such commentary could create a perception of political bias and risk breaching judicial codes of conduct. Meanwhile, some political figures have defended the remarks, suggesting the Chief Justice has previously been critical of the government without facing similar backlash.
