Chief Justice Surya Kant to preside over NLSIU convocation
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant is scheduled to preside over the 34th Annual Convocation of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru on October 17. The event follows a previous cancellation in August, which the university attributed to “unavoidable circumstances” after students and alumni expressed opposition to the participation of the CJI and the Bar Council of India Chairman.
The upcoming ceremony will feature Arundhati Nag, a Padma Shri awardee and co-founder of Ranga Shankara, as the chief guest delivering the convocation address. Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr) Sudhir Krishnaswamy will present the university's annual report.
In a separate address during the Prof. N R Madhava Menon Memorial Lecture, Chief Justice Kant emphasized the necessity of compassion within the judiciary. He stated that the law’s primary duty is to be understood by the people it governs. Kant defined judicial compassion not as sympathy or charity, but as the discipline of recognizing the full human context behind every case, advocating for accessible legal language and improved protections for vulnerable witnesses.
