Chief Mountain border crossing to close September 30
The seasonal Chief Mountain border crossing in southern Alberta will close at 6 p.m. on September 30 and is scheduled to reopen in spring 2027. Due to its high elevation and harsh winter conditions, the port of entry only operates from May through September.
Located on Alberta Highway 6 at the edge of Waterton Lakes National Park, the crossing connects Canada with Montana. During the winter closure, travelers are advised to use alternative ports of entry, such as Carway, Del Bonita, or Coutts.
The Canada Border Services Agency reported that 53,993 travelers entered Canada via Chief Mountain during the 2026 season through September 7, representing an increase of nearly 5,000 travelers compared to the previous season.
