Chiefs of Ontario call for action against residential school denialism
The Chiefs of Ontario are calling for government and institutional action to confront the rise of Indian Residential School denialism. On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the organization emphasized that the harms of the residential school system continue to impact First Nations communities and families today.
Advocates are urging for the criminalization of denialism, noting that efforts to minimize or distort the truths of the system undermine survivors and hinder progress toward justice and healing.
In the educational sector, researchers have identified that denialism often manifests through racist graffiti, controversial classroom materials, and challenges to reconciliation initiatives. Experts suggest a framework for educators to address these issues through five strategies: detect, debunk, disregard, debate, and deconstruct. This approach aims to help students distinguish legitimate historical debate from claims that disregard evidence to create false controversy.
