Chieti mayor pledges new cameras after violent teen assault

A 16‑year‑old was violently attacked in Piazza Giambattista Vico in Chieti late Friday night, prompting Mayor Giovanni Legnini to publicly condemn the incident. Legnini said the assault was “unacceptable and especially worrying when it involves such young people.”

The mayor confirmed that the city’s existing video‑surveillance network – comprising cameras on Corso Marrucino, Piazza Vico, Piazza Trento and Trieste, the municipal villa, Piazza Carafa, Piazzale Marconi, the Scalo gallery and near the Cesarii school – will be made available to investigators. He announced that 14 additional cameras will be installed by September to strengthen monitoring in the most frequented areas. Legnini also pledged continued cooperation with the Prefecture, the Questura and other law‑enforcement authorities.

The assault is under investigation, with police working to reconstruct the event and identify the perpetrators using the footage.
