Chieti officials inspect underground heritage and public works sites

Local authorities in Chieti are advancing several urban development and heritage preservation projects. Mayor Giovanni Legnini recently led an inspection of the city’s underground heritage (ipogei) to develop a strategy for making these historical sites accessible to the public. The inspection, involving archaeologists and geologists, focused on Roman hydraulic complexes in via Gizzi and multi-era tunnels in Palazzo de’ Mayo, addressing technical challenges such as groundwater management.

Simultaneously, the administration is overseeing public works funded by the PNRR. Construction is nearing completion at the Amiterno Outdoor sports complex in Chieti Scalo, which features a multi-purpose outdoor facility including a skatepark and various courts. Additionally, restoration and seismic upgrading work is underway at the former Principessa di Piemonte nursery, a project valued at over 2 million euros. The city is currently evaluating whether the renovated space will be utilized by the university or for social and cultural associations.
