Chieti Oncology Unit joins 20 experts setting national IGRT guidelines

The Chieti Oncology Radiotherapy Unit has been recognized as one of 20 Italian centers of excellence following the publication of new national guidelines for Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT). Published in the scientific journal Oncologiele, these recommendations aim to standardize high-quality, high-precision radiation treatments for gastrointestinal tumors of the upper abdomen, including the pancreas, stomach, liver, and bile ducts.

The consensus was promoted by major scientific societies, including the Italian Society of Radiotherapy and Clinical Oncology (AIRO), the Italian Society of Oncology Radiotherapy Technicians (AITRO), and the Italian Society of Health Physicists dedicated to Radiotherapy (AIFM).

A multidisciplinary panel of 20 experts, selected based on over a decade of experience, established 16 decisive points for implementing precision radiotherapy in daily clinical practice. Professor Domenico Genovesi, Director of Oncology Radiotherapy in Chieti, noted that key elements for precision include accurate respiratory movement control and daily CT scans on modern linear accelerators to ensure precise anatomical delineation.
