Chihuahua authorities advise calling police to prevent staged accident fraud
The Secretariat of Public Security (SSPE) in Chihuahua is advising drivers to remain calm and request the presence of traffic police following vehicle accidents that may involve “montachoques” (staged accidents).
Subsecretary of Mobility César Komaba noted that it is difficult to immediately determine if an accident was deliberately provoked. He recommended that involved parties call 9-1-1 to request traffic police assistance and contact their insurance companies. The presence of authorities is intended to ensure incidents are handled according to established procedures and to deter individuals from demanding immediate cash payments for alleged vehicle damages.
