Ciudad Juárez reports land subsidence and ongoing missing persons searches
Various social and environmental developments are being reported in Ciudad Juárez. A scientific study published in Nature Cities, utilizing Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite data, identifies the city as one of the Mexican urban centers experiencing land subsidence. Ciudad Juárez records an annual sinking rate of 0.5 millimeters, ranking sixth nationally among cities with over one million inhabitants.
Regarding public safety, the Municipal Public Security Secretary, César Omar Muñoz Morales, noted a decrease in requests for police escorts for cash transfers due to the increased use of electronic banking. He also issued warnings regarding telephone extortion and urged citizens to end suspicious calls immediately.
In response to the ongoing disappearance crisis, the Centro de Derechos Humanos Paso del Norte launched the “Te presento a” project. This initiative artistically intervenes search posters for 20 missing men to include their personal interests and life stories, aiming to humanize the victims beyond cold official documents. Additionally, the Chihuahua State Prosecutor's Office has issued an urgent search for Reyna Janeth Gardea Abrego and her 14-year-old daughter, Brisa Fernanda Pacheco Gardea, who have been missing since October 14.
