Chihuahua authorities seize 818 licenses for DUI offenses

In Chihuahua, Mexico, authorities have seized 818 driver's licenses so far in 2026 due to driving under the influence. This increase follows the implementation of the State of Chihuahua Mobility and Road Safety Law on January 1, 2025.

The new legislation mandates that individuals caught driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or psychotropic substances face a minimum one-year suspension of their driving privileges. Under Article 109, the seizure of a license is a formal sanction rather than just a preventive measure during checkpoints.

The law also established stricter alcohol limits. For private motorists, the limit is set at 0.25 milligrams of alcohol per liter of exhaled air or 0.05 grams per deciliter of blood. Stricter limits apply to motorcyclists, novice drivers, and minors, while drivers of passenger or cargo vehicles are prohibited from driving with any detectable concentration of alcohol.
