Chihuahua by UTMB brings 1,100 runners to Barrancas del Cobre

The second edition of the Chihuahua by UTMB trail running competition is taking place in the Sierra Tarahumara, specifically within the Barrancas del Cobre region. The event features over 1,100 athletes representing 27 different countries, including participants from Spain, the United States, Canada, China, and Japan.

As part of the UTMB World Series, the competition offers various distances, including the Rarámuri 100-mile race, Wériga 93K, Akáa 59K, Komakali 39K, Napurega 21K, and Norawa 9K. The event highlights the participation of local Rarámuri runners, with approximately 131 indigenous athletes competing across the different categories.

Through the ‘Norawa’ initiative, local runners receive support such as mandatory equipment, transportation, lodging, food, and financial compensation to ensure equitable competitive conditions. The event is promoted by the Secretariat of Tourism in coordination with the Ah Chihuahua trust and Parque Barrancas.
