Chihuahua Congress declares October 30 as State Day of the Tianguis

The Chihuahua State Congress has officially declared October 30 as the “State Day of the Tianguis and the Tianguista.” The reform, proposed by members of the National Action Party, aims to recognize the economic and cultural contributions of traditional open-air markets.

According to Carlos Alfredo Olson San Vicente, president of the Commission of Economy, Industry, and Commerce, an estimated 35,000 families in the state depend directly or indirectly on this activity. The legislation seeks to dignify the work of these vendors, who operate largely within the informal economy, and acknowledges their role in providing essential goods at accessible prices for low-income populations.

The declaration also highlights the historical significance of tianguis, noting their pre-Hispanic origins and their status as intangible cultural heritage that preserves local traditions, including gastronomy and crafts.
