Chihuahua Congress seeks lower electricity rates for apple producers
The Chihuahua State Congress has approved an exhortation to federal authorities to seek lower electricity rates for the state's fruit producers, specifically those involved in apple cultivation.
Legislator Jaime Torres Amaya proposed the measure to address high energy costs associated with refrigeration and controlled atmosphere chambers. He noted that Chihuahua produces approximately 80 percent of Mexico's apples, making the sector vital for the regional economy and food security. The industry supports roughly 15,000 permanent jobs and generates over 15 million daily wages annually.
A primary concern cited is the competitive disadvantage faced by Mexican producers; electricity costs for fruit preservation can be up to four times higher than those paid by producers in the United States. The proposal calls on the federal Congress, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Energy, and the Federal Electricity Commission to analyze preferential tariffs or energy stimulus schemes to ensure the long-term viability of the sector.
