Peru government announces 90% reduction in transport fines
The Peruvian government, led by President Keiko Fujimori, has announced a significant reduction in transportation fines. Through the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), an exceptional regime has been established via Supreme Decree 017-2026, allowing for up to a 90% reduction in fines for both public and private transport. This measure aims to facilitate the payment of pending sanctions and follows discussions with transport guilds.
The reduction applies to fines in various stages, including those in process, firm, or under coercive execution. However, serious infractions such as driving under the influence, informality, aggression against inspectors, and traffic accidents are strictly excluded from this benefit. Additionally, the government has confirmed the repeal of the current points-based system for transport, with a new proposal expected to follow dialogue with affected sectors.
In separate infrastructure news, Senace has approved the environmental impact study for the first section of the Nueva Carretera Central (NCC) ahead of the legal deadline. This strategic project, part of the National Infrastructure Plan 2026-2031, involves an investment exceeding S/ 2,000 million and aims to improve connectivity between the districts of Lurigancho, Ate, and Cieneguilla in Lima.
