Mexican electoral institutes manage diverse regional political processes

Various electoral institutes in Mexico are processing significant administrative and legislative developments. In Puebla, the Instituto Electoral del Estado (IEE) unanimously approved the retention of registration for three local political parties: Pacto Social de Integración, Partido Político, Nueva Alianza Puebla, and Fuerza por México Puebla, after they met membership and territorial requirements.

In Chihuahua, the Instituto Estatal Electoral (IEE) has moved two citizen-led initiatives to the support-gathering stage. One, known as ‘Ley Canela’, seeks to reform the state penal code regarding animal cruelty and sexual violence. The other is a legislative referendum regarding the direct election of councilors (regidurías).

In Oaxaca, the IEEPCO validated extraordinary elections for several municipal council positions in towns governed by Indigenous Normative Systems, including Mazatlán Villa de Flores and San Juan Lajarcia. Meanwhile, in Guanajuato, the IEEG approved affirmative actions requiring only women to run for municipal presidencies in 13 specific municipalities to address historical gender gaps, a move facing opposition criticism.

In Coahuila, the Instituto Electoral (IEC) failed to reach a consensus on appointing a new head for the Technical Unit for Parity and Inclusion (UTPI), leaving the position vacant due to internal disagreements.
