César Jáuregui linked to process for illegal exercise of public service

Former Chihuahua Attorney General César Jáuregui Moreno has been linked to a criminal process for the illegal exercise of public service. The charge stems from his alleged authorization of an operation in the Tarahumara sierra involving U.S. intelligence agents, which resulted in the deaths of two Americans during a traffic accident.

During a hearing held via videoconference from the Altiplano federal prison, Judge Luis Alberto Simental Ortega dismissed a separate charge of coalition but maintained the proceedings regarding his official duties. Jáuregui remains in pretrial detention while facing additional federal charges of treason brought by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

The case has triggered significant political tension between Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos and President Claudia Sheinbaum. Campos has characterized the federal prosecution as disproportionate and politically motivated, while the FGR has opened a new investigation into Jáuregui following allegations from the Governor regarding corruption involving casinos and the use of straw men.
