Chihuahua honors former Governor Francisco Barrio Terrazas with new monument

A monument and a section of the Circuito Universitario have been dedicated to the late former Governor of Chihuahua, Francisco Barrio Terrazas. The unveiling ceremony was led by Mayor Marco Bonilla and attended by Barrio’s widow, Hortensia Olivas de Barrio, along with family members and officials from the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (UACH).

Mayor Bonilla honored Barrio as a central figure in the democratic transformation of Chihuahua and Mexico, noting his role in fostering civic participation during periods of economic difficulty and political repression. He also highlighted Barrio’s connection to UACH, noting that during his administration, the initial investments and land acquisitions were made to develop what is now the Ciudad Universitaria.

Hortensia Olivas de Barrio provided an emotional tribute, describing her husband as a man of conviction who entered politics to serve without ties or compromises. She emphasized his commitment to transparency and his belief that electoral victories were merely steps in a broader struggle for democratic values.
