Chihuahua electoral authority faces backlash over gender parity proposal

The State Electoral Institute (IEE) of Chihuahua is facing significant opposition from political parties regarding a proposed set of guidelines for the 2026-2027 electoral process. The proposal suggests reserving certain municipal candidacies exclusively for women in 23 municipalities to promote gender parity and affirmative action.

Representatives from the PRI, PAN, and Movimiento Ciudadano have criticized the move, arguing that the IEE is overstepping its authority and attempting to legislate rather than act as a neutral arbiter. Legislators have characterized the proposal as an intrusion into the internal organization of political parties and a potential violation of citizens' political rights.

In response, IEE President Yanko Durán Prieto clarified that the document is currently a draft under review and has not been officially approved. She stated that the institute is seeking feedback from political parties to potentially adjust the guidelines before the State Council holds a vote. Durán emphasized the institution's neutrality and its commitment to ensuring the participation of historically vulnerable groups.
