Chihuahua legislators debate autonomous State Attorney General's Office

Political leaders in Chihuahua are debating a proposal to create an autonomous State Attorney General's Office (Fiscalía General del Estado). Alex Domínguez, a federal deputy and state president of the PRI, stated that while autonomy could reduce political interference by separating the office from the Executive branch, it must be balanced with transparency, democratic legitimacy, and strict accountability.

Domínguez raised concerns regarding the proposed eight-year term, which could allow an individual to remain in power for up to 16 years, and noted inconsistencies in the selection process for the head of the office.

Meanwhile, Edin Cuauhtémoc Estrada Sotelo, Morena coordinator in the State Congress, proposed that the autonomous prosecutor's office include specialized units. These units would be designed to serve vulnerable groups, specifically people with disabilities and indigenous peoples, to ensure access to justice through specialized training and the provision of interpreters.
