Chihuahua legislators demand security against illegal roadblocks
Legislators in Chihuahua are calling for increased security and legal certainty following reports of illegitimate roadside checkpoints. Federal Deputy Alejandro Domínguez highlighted the presence of ‘policías con tenis’ (police in sneakers), a term used to describe checkpoints operated by organized crime rather than legitimate authorities.
Domínguez also noted that deteriorating highway infrastructure, specifically in areas such as the connection between Nonoava and Guachochi and the route from Santo Tomás to Temósachic, exacerbates regional insecurity. He emphasized the need for authorities to address the growing phenomenon of insecurity in various municipalities.
Nancy Frías, president of the State Congress Security Commission, stated that while security operations are necessary, they must be conducted with strict adherence to the law and clear protocols. She urged that checkpoints should not be carried out in secrecy and must respect citizens' rights to avoid generating uncertainty and fear.
