Chihuahua Municipal Cyber Police Issue Rental Scam Warning

The Municipal Cyber Police of Chihuahua released a public advisory to help residents avoid online rental scams. With the return to school and job‑related moves driving a surge in searches for apartments and houses, fraudsters are posting counterfeit listings on social media and rental platforms, using stolen photos and false property details to lure victims.

Scammers typically claim high demand, pressure potential renters to make an upfront deposit, and may provide falsified identification to gain trust. After receiving the money, they cut off contact and disappear. Authorities urge anyone interested in a rental to visit the property in person, request proper documentation, be skeptical of unusually low prices, avoid deposits made under pressure, and verify the address, phone number, photos and the advertiser’s profile. For assistance, the police can be reached at 614‑442‑7300, extension 3214, during business hours.
