Chihuahua floods kill one, trigger municipal evacuations and clean‑up

Intense rains in Chihuahua city caused severe flooding on July 15‑16, 2026. A 31‑year‑old driver, Alejandro Camacho Madrid, was swept away and died when his vehicle was carried into a storm drain on Avenida Nueva España. Several other cars were also dragged by the current.

Municipal authorities responded with a large emergency effort. The Dirección de Seguridad Pública logged 67 service calls, including 42 flood incidents and 19 rescues. The Protección Civil unit closed streets, rescued trapped occupants, and cleared debris. The municipal government also evacuated families living in the high‑risk El Porvenir neighborhood, demolished improvised houses built on a stream bed, and removed rubble with heavy machinery. Animal welfare officials rescued 11 dogs and arranged vaccination and sterilisation. The coordinated actions aimed to reduce flood risk, protect residents and restore safe public spaces.

Officials warned residents to avoid crossing flooded streets, arroyos or channels, as further precipitation was forecast for the region.
