Chihuahua Municipality to defend Mápula landfill project ruling

The Chihuahua Municipality has announced it will legally defend a favorable ruling regarding the Mápula Metropolitan Sanitary Landfill project following a filed appeal for review. Roberto Fuentes, Secretary of the Chihuahua City Council, stated that the municipality is awaiting formal notification to join the legal proceedings. He noted that the original ruling found the project site is not located within protected natural areas, recharge zones, or fluvial plains, and found no evidence that operations would cause soil contamination.

To ensure environmental safety, the court established additional requirements, including the use of double membranes, well monitoring, specific certifications, and citizen participation mechanisms. These measures are currently being reviewed by the Municipality and the Secretariat of Urban Development and Ecology.

District 16 Deputy Carla Rivas has called for the debate surrounding the landfill to be based on technical and legal facts rather than political interests. She emphasized the importance of respecting the rule of law while the judicial process, which includes a review filed on August 31, remains ongoing.
