Chihuahua official proposes new hiking regulations

Chihuahua City Council member Ana Lilia Orozco Ortiz has proposed a new initiative to establish the ‘Regulation for the Practice of Hiking and Responsible Use of Natural Areas.’ The proposal aims to address safety concerns raised by local athletes who navigate mountainous regions within the municipality.

Orozco Ortiz noted that the lack of existing legislation has led to the opening of clandestine routes, disorganized mass participation, and social disturbances in rural communities. She highlighted that the Municipal Civil Protection Coordination frequently manages weekly search and rescue operations for lost or injured hikers.

The initiative also suggests creating a committee operated by the Municipal Institute of Physical Culture and Sport to improve the organization, planning, and control of the sport.
