IEEM prepares voting options for State of Mexico residents living abroad

The Electoral Institute of the State of Mexico (IEEM) is refining its strategy to ensure political-electoral rights for migrants living abroad. According to electoral counselor Paula Melgarejo Salgado, the registry includes 82,176 residents from the State of Mexico with voting credentials abroad, approximately 90 percent of whom are located in the United States.

Registration can be completed remotely using the National Electoral Institute (INE) mobile application or the INETEL telephone line. Voters can choose from three modalities: electronic voting, which is a priority for nearly 80 percent of those registered; receiving a postal electoral package with prepaid postage; or voting at selected consulates using electronic ballot boxes.

Melgarejo Salgado emphasized the security of these systems, noting that electronic voting utilizes five cryptographic signatures to ensure integrity. For postal voting, ballots include more than ten physical security measures.
