Chihuahua security helicopter attacked by gunfire

A state security helicopter was targeted by gunfire while conducting surveillance operations in the region between Coyame del Sotol and Ojinaga, Chihuahua. The attack occurred days after the arrest of criminal leader Epifanio N., also known as ‘La Pepa’.

State Public Security Secretary Gilberto Loya Chávez confirmed that the aircraft sustained at least 24 bullet impacts. During the aggression, a 26-year-old security officer identified as Edgar C. J., serving as an aerial observer, was struck in the head. He is currently hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

Authorities reported that the shots were fired from the ground by armed individuals. One shooter was reportedly positioned behind a water tank to target the fuselage. While local reports suggested the use of .50 caliber weapons, officials stated that long guns with calibers such as .224 and 7.62 x 39 mm were involved, pending final forensic results from the State Attorney General's Office.

The helicopter, which is a rented unit rather than state property, was forced to divert to the Roberto Fierro International Airport in Chihuahua City. Following the incident, security operations have been reinforced along the corridor connecting Chihuahua to the Texas border.
