Chihuahua's attorney general seat vacant for two months amid security concerns

Chihuahua, Mexico, has been without a permanent Attorney General for more than two months, even as the state remains among the nation’s highest homicide zones. Morena deputy María Antonieta Pérez Reyes said the vacancy sends a troubling message that public security is not a priority for the state government. She argued the delay is political, noting the governor favors loyalty over technical competence when appointing officials.

Pérez Reyes cited past failures, including the “Jueves Negro” massacre in Ciudad Juárez that left 12 people dead and a prison riot that killed several inmates and custodians. She warned the legislature will scrutinize any nominee and reject candidates perceived as merely loyal to the governor. She stated, “the problem is not lack of prepared people, the problem is the governor has turned strategic appointments into an exercise of loyalty.”
