Chihuahua's Poniente 5 Road Project Gains Political Backing Amid Morena Opposition

State and municipal officials in Chihuahua are pushing ahead with the Poniente 5 road corridor, describing it as a strategic infrastructure work to ease traffic on the overloaded Periférico de la Juventud. The project, long identified since 1994, is slated to receive funding from the state government led by Governor Maru Campos, while the city will secure credit through competitive bidding among financial institutions.

The municipal secretary, Roberto Fuentes, said the plan needs a qualified majority of 22 votes in the state Congress to approve financing. PAN parliamentary coordinator Alfredo Chávez highlighted a 40 % rise in the city’s vehicle fleet in recent years as the driver of congestion. He criticized Morena legislators for refusing to negotiate on the project, despite support from other parties.

If approved, Poniente 5 will create a new traffic corridor serving neighborhoods such as Valle Escondido, Canteras, Infonavit and Saucito, aiming to reduce load on existing routes and support the city’s vertical growth policies.
