Chiikawa sparks debate over potential musical adaptation

The popular manga and anime series ‘Chiikawa’ has recently become the center of social media discussion following comments regarding a potential musical adaptation. Singer Ayaka Hirahara sparked conversation by posting on X about her dream to consult with Toho producers regarding a ‘Chiikawa’ musical, even expressing interest in auditioning for the character Usagi.

Copywriter Shigesato Itoi drew criticism after quoting Hirahara’s post, which fans interpreted as an attempt by celebrities to insert themselves into the franchise. This backlash has highlighted a divide between fans and public figures; many supporters of the series have praised the recent ‘Chiikawa’ film for its decision to avoid celebrity voice actors and mainstream musical tie-ins, opting instead for a production that stays true to the original creator Nagano’s vision.

In a separate development, the series creator Nagano released new illustrations of the characters Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi from a side profile, which has been met with widespread enthusiasm from the fanbase. Additionally, the ninth volume of the original manga is scheduled for release on November 20, 2026.
