Chișinău approves e-ticketing system for public transport

The Chișinău Municipal Council has approved a concept for an e-ticketing system to modernize public transportation in the city. The new system aims to phase out paper tickets and cash payments in favor of a “tap-and-go” method.

Under the proposed framework, passengers will be able to pay for trips by tapping a transport card, bank card, or smartphone against a validator installed in buses and trolleybuses. To ensure accessibility for those without smartphones or bank accounts, a dedicated transport card will be available.

The implementation is expected to be completed by 2030. The transition will involve the city's two municipal transport enterprises, which currently operate a combined fleet of over 650 vehicles. The approval marks the beginning of the procurement and technical preparation phase, including determining the necessary number of devices and selecting a service provider.
