Chișinău Central Market grapples with heatwave as shoppers seek shade, vendors struggle
On July 19‑20, a yellow heat‑wave alert covering central and southern Moldova saw temperatures in Chișinău rise to about 35 °C. Despite the extreme heat, the Central Market remained crowded. Buyers moved to shaded stalls and drank increased amounts of water, while many purchased cold mineral drinks.
Vendors, however, faced prolonged exposure to the sun while trying to keep fruits, vegetables and greens fresh. They reported that cold water from refrigerators ran out quickly, and some suggested installing a water dispenser to serve customers. The market’s activity continued as sellers aimed to sell their merchandise before it spoiled.
Authorities advised the public to avoid prolonged sun exposure, stay hydrated, wear light clothing and watch especially children and the elderly.
