Chișinău City Hall faces degradation amid delayed restoration

The Chișinău City Hall, a prominent architectural monument in Moldova's capital, is facing significant degradation as restoration efforts remain delayed. The building, originally completed in 1902, shows visible signs of aging, including peeling plaster, deteriorating facades, and rotting wooden window frames.

A recent attempt to select a company for the rehabilitation project failed after no bids were submitted during the initial tender process. While authorities have relaunched the procurement procedure, the building remains in a precarious state.

Historically, the structure was designed by architect Mitrofan Elladi and supervised by Alexandru Bernardazzi. It survived destruction in 1941 and severe damage during the 1944 Iași-Chișinău operation, eventually being reconstructed under architect Robert Kurtz. Local residents have expressed concern over the building's condition, emphasizing the need to preserve the city's architectural face.
