Chișinău International Airport prepares for surge in Hasidic pilgrims

Authorities in Moldova are preparing for an increased influx of passengers at Chișinău International Airport between September 7 and 17. This surge is due to Hasidic pilgrims transiting through Moldova to reach Uman, Ukraine, for the Rosh Hashanah celebrations.

To manage the crowds and prevent delays, the Border Police, Customs Service, and airport administration will increase personnel in high-traffic areas. Law enforcement agencies, including the Carabinieri and General Police, will also provide support to ensure public order and smooth operations. Officials aim to monitor passenger flows continuously and adjust control procedures to minimize waiting times without disrupting regular flights.

Since the closure of Ukrainian airspace in 2022, Chișinău has become a primary transit hub for pilgrims traveling from Israel, the United States, and Europe. While the pilgrimage is a significant annual event, the U.S. Department of State has advised American citizens to avoid traveling to Uman due to security risks and limited air-raid shelters, maintaining a “Do Not Travel” advisory for Ukraine.
