Chișinău mayor and Romanian police alert public to sophisticated fraud schemes

Mayor Ion Ceban of Chișinău warned that fraudsters are increasingly using sophisticated methods, including involving children in scams, and urged residents to protect personal data and refrain from sharing information with unknown callers. He called on authorities to step up anti‑fraud measures.

The Romanian Police announced a new telephone scam in which callers pose as police officers and send forged documents via WhatsApp to convince victims to withdraw cash from banks. A reported case involved a woman who handed over her savings after being told her identity had been used in a fake loan. Police emphasized that they never request cash withdrawals by phone and urged the public to ignore such calls, protect personal and banking details, and verify any claims through official channels.
