Chișinău schools report lice and scabies outbreaks
Schools in Chișinău are experiencing cases of head lice (pediculosis) and scabies. Medical assistants in the capital have reported that overcrowded classrooms make it difficult to conduct regular, comprehensive checks on all students. Consequently, school staff often only perform examinations when a specific suspicion or report is raised.
Medical professionals are urging parents to monitor their children's hair and skin regularly for early signs of infestation. In instances where lice are detected, students are typically isolated and sent home until the condition is fully resolved.
According to the National Public Health Agency (ANSP), hundreds of cases are recorded annually across Moldova. For the year 2026, the agency's information system has already recorded 313 cases of pediculosis and approximately 574 cases of scabies. Marcela Chilianu, head of the Directorate of medical-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance at ANSP, noted that these conditions occur year-round regardless of the season.
