Chiko Roll 75th anniversary sparks regional rivalry

The 75th anniversary of the Chiko Roll has reignited a regional dispute among three Australian cities claiming to be its spiritual home. Created by Bendigo boilermaker Frank McEncroe, the savory snack was first launched at the Wagga Wagga Jubilee Show in August 1951.

Each city bases its claim on a different milestone: Bendigo asserts its status as the birthplace because McEncroe developed the recipe there; Wagga Wagga argues the product was born upon its public debut; and Bathurst claims ownership due to its role in manufacturing the rolls for over three decades since 1995.

Originally known as the "Chicken Roll," the product consists of a thick pastry tube filled with cabbage, barley, carrot, celery, onion, and meat. At its peak in the 1970s, approximately 40 million rolls were sold annually. Bendigo is currently marking the anniversary with celebrations at the Black Swan Hotel and Motorbike Museum.
